Career profile

Truck drivers operate heavy trucks to deliver goods and materials. They perform routine checks on their vehicles and follow safety procedures for transporting dangerous good to ensure they can deliver their loads safely and efficiently. They may be long-haul transport truck drivers, short-haul and local transport truck drivers.

In this occupation, activities may include:

  • Running, maneuvering, navigating or driving vehicles or mechanized equipment
  • Inspecting equipment, structures or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects
  • Observing, receiving and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources
  • Identifying information by categorizing, estimating, recognizing differences or similarities, and detecting changes in circumstances or events
  • Using either control mechanisms or direct physical activity to operate machines or processes (not including computers or vehicles)
  • Analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems
  • Providing information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e-mail or in person
  • Entering, transcribing, recording, storing or maintaining information in written or electronic/magnetic form

Education

  • Grade 10 education is required. Some employers may require a high school diploma.
  • Completion of an accredited driver training course may be required.

Certifications

  • Standard and emergency first aid
  • Transportation of dangerous goods (TDG)
  • Oilfield driver awareness
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)

Licensing

  • A Class 3 or D licence is required to drive straight-body trucks
  • A Class 1 or A licence is required to drive long-combination vehicles
  • Air brake endorsement (Z) is required for drivers who operate vehicles equipped with air brakes.

Additional requirements

  • At least 18 years old with a valid driver’s licence
