They know that small changes can have large impacts. Even the smallest changes they apply to machinery and equipment layouts, workflows and processes can make entire facilities run more efficiently.

Industrial Engineering Technologists examine health and safety plans to ensure they would work effectively in an emergency situation. They design facility layouts to ensure all people, materials and machines are in the most efficient and safest places. They develop quality assurance programs and perform control tests, allowing for consistent production quality. They also create documents, directives, reports and procedures to highlight the ideal processes.

They often work closely with Industrial Engineers to collect and analyze data related to quality, and with other Industrial Engineering Technologists to develop applications using computer-assisted drafting (CAD), computer-assisted manufacturing (CAM) and computer numerical control (CNC) machines to help make quality more consistent or increase productivity.

Industrial Engineering Technologists go where they are needed. If they are improving Health and Safety procedures, they will likely work in an office environment. If they are finding ways to make a plant layout more productive, they will be on site. These technologists are typically employed in the exploration and production (E&P), oil sands and oil and gas services and pipeline sectors of the oil and gas industry.
