Much like an Architect for a skyscraper plans, designs and reviews the construction of the building, a Technology Architect plans, designs and reviews the technology structure for their company. They pay attention to the details and make sure that the technology framework is put together piece by piece.

What a typical day looks like:

Every step of the oil and gas process—drilling, processing, transport and marketing—includes complex and sophisticated technologies. Technology Architects look at all these moving pieces and make sure that all that technology works well together. They also design and plan the implementation of new systems and technology.

This role can become highly specialized. Solution Architects, for example, develop solutions to specific business problems. Domain Architects oversee business, application, data/information and infrastructure areas. Enterprise Architects address all-encompassing or over-all organizational domain issues and Cloud Architects look after their company’s cloud computing network and strategy.

Regardless of which career path a Technology Architect follows, they are focused on designing the high-level structure of new technology solutions, including the emerging technologies that different teams may use. They gather all the data, software and hardware that the team needs, and build a plan. This includes planning the resources needed to implement the new solution, figuring out how these technologies will work together and identifying potential roadblocks. They will also work with business units to develop and implement plans, policies and procedures about how to use these integrated technologies.

The kinds of problems do Technology Architects solve at work:

Technology Architects look at all of the company’s data, software and hardware as one integrated unit. If pieces of this complex puzzle are not working together, or if updates need to happen within the system, Technology Architects need to look at how to fix problems and progress technology without disrupting the system. They also work closely with various business units to assess physical and technical security risks and help keep the company’s information secure.

Skills used most on the job:

Technology Architects are logical, organized and highly technical. They have a strong knowledge of existing wired and wireless networking/SAN solutions, local and remote backup technologies, VOIP services, core business applications and emerging technologies. They are also able to clearly communicate complex ideas and plans to non-technical people.

Technology architects make sure that all of the different types of technology that a team needs are knitted together and working as one system.
