The Energy Career Transition and Employment Resource
Workers with experience in oil and gas are technically well-suited for employment in emerging sectors adjacent to oil and gas. The path to a successful career transition is not always clear—either for job seekers or employers.
The Energy Career Transition and Employment Resource on CareerTransitions.ca is designed to help unemployed or underemployed workers in oil and gas redirect their careers into emerging occupations, different work arrangements, the broader energy sector or different industries.
The Resource was developed to help address labour market inefficiencies created by the downturn in the oil and gas industry. It aims to close the employment gap by providing:
- An assessment of opportunities available based on job seekers’ transferable skills.
- Insights for employers about available talent in Alberta.
- Information about the transferability of skills, knowledge and experience obtained in the oil and gas industry to other sectors, including:
- agri-business
- clean tech
- supply chain
- power generation (renewables)
- petrochemical manufacturing
- oil and gas services
- pure high tech
- liquefied natural gas (LNG)
- high tech in oil and gas
- industrial construction and maintenance
Making sense of the career transition
PetroLMI developed a webinar series to make the Energy Career Transition and Employment Resource accessible to all job seekers and employers. Each webinar in the series provides tips for monitoring industry and job trends, discusses leading indicators of employment, and shares insights into the activities most likely to result in industry jobs and successful transitions.

Career Transferability: Oil and Gas into Heavy Industrial Construction and Maintenance
A key employment driver in industrial construction and maintenance is investment in infrastructure by Canada’s oil and gas companies. This webinar highlights the similarities and differences between traditional oil and gas occupations and those in the industrial construction and maintenance sub-sector and the transferability of workers between them. Transferability between these two sectors differs along the project life cycle, which is important for job seekers to recognize when targeting their job search and/or career transition.
Funding for this project was provided by the Province of Alberta, working in partnership with the Government of Canada to provide employment support programs and services.
